How to develop your heroes, who reach 5 stars, and whether to focus on your main team or not. Many people wonder about the right way to do this. Here, we’ll try to provide some answers.
The main team trap with 5 stars
Many people prioritize upgrading their main team, or T1, to 5 stars, and completely neglect the rest. Yes, you need to upgrade your main team to 5 stars, but maybe not in the way you think.
You don’t need to upgrade all the heroes in a team to 5 stars to have a good team. As a free-to-play player, your resources, especially shards, are limited. Moreover, even with all your willpower, you won’t be able to compete with non-free-to-play players, let alone whales. Therefore, you need to adopt a different strategy.
Upgrading an entire team from 4 stars to 5 requires 2,500 shards. You’ll spend time getting them and miss out on other priorities.
Can you have a decent team without having all 5-star heroes?
The answer is yes and here are some examples.

The best equipment was put on each of these teams. In this regard, the main team is aircraft.
Strategy for developing your heroes
- Don’t invest heavily in purple heroes
- Upgrade your team buildings
- Unlock all UR heroes (Gold) as quickly as possible
- Level up your UR heroes
- Upgrade all UR heroes to 4 stars
- Improve your UR heroes’ skills
- Prioritize your key team heroes (DVA / Kimberley / Tesla)
- Work on your main team
- Upgrade exclusive weapons
Don’t invest heavily in purple heroes
Don’t invest heavily in purple heroes; they’ll quickly be overtaken by so-called UR (Gold) heroes, who are much more powerful and offer better returns. Think of them as stopgaps while you unlock UR heroes.
For purple heroes who serve as stopgaps while you wait for a UR (Gold) hero, upgrade their level to 100 or 120 and their skills to 10, or not at all. However, there are exceptions like Mason, who will be very useful for the “Wanted Boss Code”
- Level 100 is required to complete the Secret Squad Mobile Task.
- Level 120 is required to complete Ghost Operations.
Upgrade your team buildings
Upgrade your team buildings to level 30 as quickly as possible, starting with your main team building.
Buildings need to be improved.
- Tank Center
- Aircraft Center
- Missile Center

Unlock all UR heroes as quickly as possible
There are several ways to unlock heroes.
- Purchase them in the store, the offer is 5 euros.
- With recruitment tickets.
- Ghost Operations.
Buy in store
This is the fastest way to unlock a hero and is ideal for those on a budget. The offer is €5 in the store.
Recruitment tickets
Your recruitment tickets allow you to unlock heroes overtime. However, this is a lengthy process; not all heroes will be available, and they will appear gradually.

Best time to use your tickets
- To complete the Hero Arms Race
- Day 4 – (Thursday) during VS: Train Your Heroes
Ghost Operations
Ghost Operations will allow you to unlock all UR heroes, but this event will be available later in the game. (Day 60 of Season 1)

Level up your UR heroes
All UR heroes must be level 150 (and higher after season 2), so level up heroes first based on availability, usefulness and your team’s priority.
Troop capacity (March size)
The March Size is the number of troops (soldiers) your hero can take with him in battle. The more troops they have, the more powerful you will be. Upgrading hero levels and team buildings increases your ability to take troops into battle and makes you stronger.

Why is 4 stars important?
First, try to upgrade all your heroes to 4 stars. To upgrade a hero to 4 stars, you need 300 specific and/or universal hero fragments. A 5-star hero requires 975 shards. At 4 stars, you unlock all of the hero’s skills, allowing you to start performing well.
4-star heroes have skills locked at level 20 and upgrading them to level 20 offers decent performance.
5-star heroes certainly have better skills, but you won’t be able to take advantage of all of them at the beginning because you’ll be short on medals to upgrade them.
Shards needed to upgrade heroes
Star Level | Tier 1 | Tier 2 | Tier 3 | Tier 4 | Tier 5 | Total |
1 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 25 |
2 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 50 |
3 | 20 | 20 | 20 | 20 | 20 | 100 |
4 | 60 | 60 | 60 | 60 | 60 | 300 |
5 | 100 | 100 | 100 | 100 | 100 | 500 |
Total | 975 |
Wall of Honor
Once your heroes have reached 5 stars, they will go on to the Wall of Honor where you can continue to upgrade them. It is not recommended to use Universal Shards for these upgrades until you have finished upgrading other heroes to 5 stars.

Upgrade your UR heroes’ skills
By upgrading your heroes’ stars, you unlock skills through a tiered system.
3-Star Upgrade
When you upgrade your hero to 3 stars, you unlock their skill level 10. You can upgrade all skills to level 10 because it’s not very expensive. Note that the 4th skill is not accessible.

4-Star Upgrade
When you upgrade your hero to 4 stars, you unlock their skill level 20. Upgrading everything to level 20 requires a certain number of medals. For optimization purposes, we assume that each hero has some essential skills and some secondary ones.
So, it all depends on your medal inventory and your hero. Leveling everything to 20 isn’t a bad idea because sooner or later, you’ll have to level up to 30. Level 20 isn’t very expensive compared to levels 30-40.

5-Star Upgrade
When you upgrade your hero to 5 stars, you unlock their level 30 skills. Upgrades after level 20 are very expensive in medals. Here, you need to target your main skill and choose your heroes wisely.

Hero Skill Priorities

Prioritize your key heroes
Each tank, plane, or missile team has a main hero (Kimberley, DVA, Tesla). This is the offensive backline hero who deals enormous damage. These heroes are available from the beginning of the game, or almost, and are considered the pillars of your team. It is strongly recommended that you level them up to 5 stars first and improve their skills to level 30 first. Start with your main team’s hero. Then, follow the key heroes of other teams.

Work on your core team
Once all the previous steps are completed, you choose a team type and work on it in detail. 5-star teams, level 30 skills, specialization research, etc.
This process is relatively long, and it will be difficult to develop all three teams at the same time due to resource constraints. You can occasionally hold catch-up sessions with the other teams, focusing on the key heroes on that team.
Tip to improve hero stars
There are two types of shards to upgrade heroes.
- Hero-specific shards
- Hero-universal shards (can be used on any hero)

Depending on hero availability, using recruitment tickets will allow you to obtain specific fragments for some heroes and not for others.
Therefore, it is recommended to use universal fragments on heroes for whom you cannot obtain specific fragments. Alternatively, use universal fragments to fill a small number of missing fragments for leveling up.
Upgrade Exclusive Weapons
Starting with Season 1, exclusive weapons will arrive. Only a few heroes, such as Kimberley, DVA, and Tesla, will benefit from them at first, and others will gradually gain access.
Based on the same principles as the shards used to upgrade stars, there will be two types of exclusive weapon shards: hero-specific and universal.

They are very difficult to obtain and require 2880 shards to reach level 30. Then after level 30 you can continue to improve the exclusive weapons, much like with the Wall of Honor.
Level | # of Shards per lv | Total per segment | Total shards |
Unlock lv1 | 50 | 50 | 50 |
lv 2 – 5 | 20 | 80 | 130 |
lv 6 – 10 | 40 | 200 | 330 |
lv 11 – 15 | 60 | 300 | 630 |
lv 16 – 20 | 100 | 500 | 1130 |
lv 21 – 25 | 150 | 750 | 1880 |
lv 26 – 30 | 200 | 1000 | 2880 |
Prioritize your main team, but don’t forget that you’ll need to unlock at least the exclusive weapons for the key heroes of other teams and do catch-up sessions, as you’ll also need them.
Note that as you upgrade exclusive weapons, you unlock skill levels. At level 30 of the exclusive weapons, you can upgrade skills to level 40.

Strategy Summary
We’re trying to improve all heroes up to a certain level, which is 4 stars, while focusing on key heroes. However, everything won’t be linear because it will depend on when you get a particular hero. You may have a long wait to unlock heroes, and you’ll have your first 5-star heroes much sooner. But the idea is to create a consistent development and then work on your core team.

Why this strategy?
You could assume you’d only develop your main team. But that will slow you down more than anything else. There are events that require three teams. This way, you’ll be able to gather more resources and therefore grow and progress faster.
So, it’s important to reach stage 50, or at least get as close as possible. This will give you a significant advantage in your progression. To do this, you need to have competitive heroes with 4 stars and improved skills.
Honorable campaign
Depending on the hero type (tank, plane, missile), three battlefields offer 20 tasks each. The difficulty increases up to level 50, and the rewards are plentiful. The event is renewed every two days.

Campaign Rewards
The rewards are varied and are awarded for each level completed. The following items are available in ever-increasing numbers:
- Experience points
- Iron
- Food
- Common campaign chest
- Rare campaign chest
- Epic campaign chest
- Legendary campaign chest
In addition, there are campaign medals which can be used to purchase items in the campaign shop, which is replenished weekly.
Campaign shop
With campaign medals, you can purchase various resources essential for progression in the campaign store. Therefore, the faster you progress through the campaign, the more campaign medals you’ll earn, allowing you to acquire more resources.
It’s a “snowball effect”: the more resources you have, the more progress you make, and the more resources you earn.
Therefore, it’s important to have three strong teams to advance as far as possible in the campaign and earn as many campaign medals as possible.
So, it’s important to wait until stage 50, or at least get as close as possible. This will give you a considerable advantage in your progression.
The campaign store is restocked every Monday, and your goal is to acquire all available resources.

Campaign chest
By completing the honorable campaign tasks, you would obtain epic and legendary campaign chests which will give you additional rewards especially hero and monument fragments.
